FECUNDITY | |
The fecundity of penaeids is positively related to size. Fecundity has been jeasured in two ways: counting the number of eggs spawned; or calculating numbers from dissected ovaries. The former method is less accurate because spawnings in captivity are often incomplete and all eggs spawned must be recovered for accurate estimates (Dall et al., 1990). Fecundity estimates in excess of 800000 eggs have been made for large females of P. monodon and P. setiferus and in excess of 1 000000 eggs for P. kerathurus and P. semisulcatus (Dall et al., 1990). |
