Hydrogen sulfide
Hydrogen sulfide gas is produced under anaerobic conditions from organic material. If oxygen is severely depleted, for example, due to biodegradation of excessive quantities of feed, hydrogen sulfide will be produced. Low oxygen levels and the presence of hydrogen sulfide may lead to "black gill disease" in shrimp which is usually followed by their death. Hydrogen sulfide production is not likely to occur in natural estuaries unless they are heavily contaminated with organic material (Korringa, 1977).
