MICROALGAE AS FEED FOR ARTEMIA NAUPLII

QUESTION:

Do artemia naupli feed on:

Chaeotocerus neogracilis or Chaeotocerus calcitrans.

COMMENTS 1:

For sure on the neogracilis...Remember, Artemia are non-discriminate

particular feeders and will ingest anything that is of the right particle

size. If the algae has a very strong or thick cell wall and the cell number is high they will normally not do well as the algal cells will pass through without being broken down.

Make it simple on yourself....try some finely ground Spirulina that is widely available. I have kept generations going on this quite some time. Just watch your water quality. I suspended an Imhoff cone above the Artemia tank and just let it drip very slowly into the culture tank. Not too sophisticated but effective. Keep the Spirulina mixed in the Imhoff cone with air.

COMMENTS 2:

They feed on C. neogracilis in my lab. Never tried calcitrans.

Does it have to be pure Spirulina? Would Artemia eat finely ground

Spirulina-based fish food? The main ingredients (in order of abundance I suspect) are herring meal, wheat flour, spirulina, shrimp meal and

soybean meal. The fish food is called Spirulina Duraflake from AquaDine.

Thanks for any info.
