"Charting the Future of Ocean Farming", 23-25 April, 1997

Aston Wailea Resort, Maui, Hawaii, USA

TOPICS:

Case Studies Worldwide

Biology of Potential Species

Production Systems

Large-scale Designs for High-energy Environments

Economics of Offshore Systems

Regulatory & Environmental Considerations

Marine Tenure and Legal Issues

Special Applications to Pacific Islands

and more...

The practicality of cage culture systems has been demonstrated throughout the world. For example, successful systems have been developed in the fjords and sounds of Europe, Chile, and eastern North America. However, exposed, high-energy and atoll environments have received little attention. Within the Pacific region, growth of aquaculture industries will require development of facilities designed for tropical and rugged coastal environments. Engineering, regulatory, economic and social issues need more study before offshore systems can be attempted on a commercial scale.
