Harvesters of brine shrimp in the US State Utah got shock notice from the state's Division of Wildlife Resources on November 22, 1996 that the season would be closing early, on November 23. In a letter to producers, such as Sanders Brine Shrimp, Great Salt Lake project leader W. Clay Perschon said that the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources had been closely monitoring the harvest. It expected this to reach last season's total of nearly 14.75 million lb by the end of Saturday, November 23. He added that preliminary data indicated that there are more shrimp in the lake this year. "Observations by harvesters and the harvest rate supports this. In our judgment, we could allow harvest up to last year's level based on that available information, we want to hold the harvest to about the same level as it was last year." Therefore, the season would end just after 5pm on the following day.
