Excerpts of communication from Manuel Garcia, former ARC MSc student (e-mail <manuelgu@uagunix.gdl.uag.mx>) to P. Sorgeloos:
"... some farms in the State besides to us are fattening white shrimp in the farms where they were once culturing fresh water prawn. There is a biologist who is acclimating the shrimp PL2-3 to the fresh water during 15 days until the animals are PL 15-17 and are ready to be introduced in the once M. rosenbergii ponds. About results, I just can tell you the animals are harvested after 100-130 days reaching around 15-18 grams in weight, the animals look good health, uniformity in size (12-18 larvae per square meter as initial density) with final harvests equivalent to 1.5-2.4 metric tons per ha per year. It seems a good solution to all these local prawn farms which were close to get bankrupt, but from my point of view it also could be dangerous if we look at the freshwater general uses".
