MARTINIQUE '97(incorporating Aquaculture Europe '97)

May 4-9, 1997. Organized by EAS, WAS, ADA, CAA, and ADAM

The conference

This conference is to be jointly organized by the European Aquaculture Society (EAS), the World Aquaculture Society (WAS), the Association pour le Developpement de l'Aquaculture (ADA), the Caribbean Aquaculture Association and the Association pour le Developpement de l'Aquaculture in Martinique (ADAM) and will take place in Les Trois-Ilets (tourist area close to the capital city), Martinique, from May 4-9, 1997.

Scope and objectives

MARTINIQUE '97 will be a global forum for discussing and evaluating the perspectives, achievements and constraints of aquaculture on islands in both the northern and southern hemisphere and the achievements and constraints of tropical aquaculture.

The main theme of the conference will be island aquaculture and tropical aquaculture, leaving space for regional aspects. In tropical and temperate areas, freshwater and marine aquaculture could be an important source of food products, employment and export revenues. However, such a development faces common challenges in biotechnology, socio-economics, and marketing in regions as different as the Caribbean or Pacific insular countries, Greek Mediterranean islands or the Scottish Hebrides and Shetlands. This domain offers a new field for cooperation between countries with advanced technology and countries with favourable sites, manpower and investment conditions.

The aim of this conference is to identify the present situation of research and development activities related to marine and coastal tropical aquaculture.

The tropical venue of MARTINIQUE '97 lends itself excellently to the planned special sessions that focus on aquaculture development in the Caribbean region and new developments in the emerging aquaculture industry of ornamental fish and invertebrates.

This event will provide an international forum for anybody interested in aquaculture, whether researchers, scientists, technicians, managers, educators, manufacturers ... around exciting aspects of aquaculture. It will provide an excellent opportunity to discuss recent developments and directions for future work with people from all over the world.

Conference format

The conference, running over 5 days, will consist of oral and poster papers, selected and case study papers, poster sessions, a technical excursion as well as two satellite conferences on Caribbean aquaculture and ornamental fish.

Language

The official language of the conference is English with simultaneous interpretation English/French in the main sessions. (Pending sufficient interest and provided sponsoring is secured simultaneous interpretation English/Spanish in one of the main sessions will be explored.)
