ALGAMAC-2000 AS ENRICHMENT FOR ARTEMIA AND ROTIFERS

QUESTION:

I am looking for information on using the spray-dried algae,

(Schizochytrium sp.) otherwise known as algamac-2000 as an enrichment for Artemia and rotifers.

I have the paper by Barclay and Zeller, 1996 but this looks at enriching

very small volumes of live food. I am interested in results on a

commercial scale level. Since enriching live food is affected by such things as temperature and oxygen levels the results for enriching

in one liter tanks will likely be different than that in 1000 liter tanks. We will be harvesting 100-200 million Artemia a day so I would appreciate some response from actual buyers and users of the product.

I am very interested in any comparisons made with oil emulsion products and other enrichments.

How do the fatty acid levels compare, any differences in growth rate,

survival, stress resistance...etc?

COMMENTS 1:

I have been using Algamac-2000 for about one month in the commercial rearing of the gilt-head seabream. I enrich about one billion rotifers a day in 2 - 3 cubic meters of media. Although it is still too early so say anything conclusively, I have not encountered any problems with the Algamac-2000. Larval survival is as good as using oil enrichments. Since there is less oil in the enrichment media, I believe that the water quality in the enrichment tanks and therefore, indirectly, in the larval rearing tanks, is better. This is a subjective observation and I do not have any hard data.

COMMENTS 2:

I am very interested by your experience with Algamac-2000. Could you precise if you cultivate the rotifers with the Algamac-2000 or if you only enriched them.

I only enrich them

COMMENTS 4:

Has anyone used Algamac -2000 with bivalve larvae, or for that matter

any other supplements to microalgal diets?

If you have, what have been your experiences, survival / growth

I am interested in trialing some off the shelf additives/emulsified

lipid products with mussel larvae in particular.

Anyone interested in Algamac-2000 can contact the distributor, Aquafauna Biomarine (Mr. Leland Lai) at aquafauna.bio-marine@worldnet.att.net. Mark Freeman and Phil Boing will be presenting a paper on the use of this feed additive in rearing bivalve seed at the WMS meeting. Several field trials have been conducted using this product to enrich Artemia nauplii and Leland could provide this information.

COMMENTS 6:

We have trialed Algamac 2000 as a supplement to raw seawater for pearl oyster spat. We also tried Microfeast L-10 and MB-30. The results for all of the artificial diets were poor, with feeding rates of 0.1 and 0.5 mg/l not promoting growth over unfed controls. In contrast, algal fed spat showed a daily growth rate of 3-4% (live weight). However, pearl oyster spat are generally difficult feeders, and you may have better results with mussel larvae. Dr Paul Southgate at James Cook University (Queensland, Australia) has investigated the use of these artificial diets with pearl oyster larvae with mixed results. I suggest that you e-mail him at paul.southgate@jcu.edu.au.
