SHIPMENT OF MACROBRACHIUM ROSENBERGII

QUESTION:

To minimize injury and stress during shipment/transport of penaeid

broodstock, animals may be individually confined in porous PVC

plastic tubes. Does anyboby have any experience with the use of this

technique with Macrobrachium rosenbergii broodstock?

This technique was a routine on 1980 to 1983 when transporting M.carcinus broodstock from Campos to Rio de Janeiro by truck for about 7 hours for Universidade Federal do Rio De Janeiro Research Program. This species is much more agressive than rosenbergii. In 1992 I used the technique to transport ovigerous females of M. rosenbergii from broodstock ponds to hatchery lab without egg losses. You can also make holes on the tubes to enhance water circulation and use mosquito netting to close tube ends.
