IDENTIFICATION AND DRUG RESISTANCE OF LUMINOUS BACTERIA IN COASTAL AREA OF INNER GULF OF THAILAND

Chaiwud Sudthongkong-1996

Abstract:

During the period February 1994 to January 1995, in the coastal area of the inner Gulf of Thailand, luminous bacteria were isolated and identified and their drug resistance investigated. Thirty sampling station in 5 provinces were designated. Fifty luminous bacteria were isolated on luminous medium (LM) from 15 stations (56.7%). The results of plate counts indicated that the number of luminous bacteria ranged from 0.7 x 10 to 7.3 x 10 CFU/mL. Three species of luminous bacteria were identified; Vibrio harveyi 32 (64%) isolates, V. albensis 14 (28%) isolates and Photobacteriurn leiognathi 4 (8%) isolates.

The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of oxolinic acid, norfloxacin, oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol and kanamycin were determined. The results indicate that MIC values ranged from 0.025 to 100, 0.4 to 100, 1.56 to 100, 25 to 100 and > 100 mg/mL, respectively. The median concentration inhibited (CI50) were 9.38, 75.0, 37.5, 18.75 > 100 microgram/mL. The drug resistance of luminous bacterial isolates were 30%, 80%, 22% and 100%, respectively.
