INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON
ROTIFER-FISH LARVAE INTERACTIONS
June 9-20, 1997, Campus Iztacala, Mexico
This is a CONACYT (A Federal Council for Science and Technology in Mexico) supported programme, approved by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) at Campus Iztacala. This is the second international programme on rotifers scheduled for the year 1997. The first one was on FIELD CULTIVATION TECHNOLOGY OF ROTIFERS, which was successfully completed during April 14-25, 1997.
Objectives:
The participants will be given both theoretical and practical aspects on predator-prey interactions using rotifers as model organisms. Intra-
rotifer predation studies give a strong exposure to the ecological
phenomena while investigation on predation of rotifers by vertebrate
(mainly fish) larvae will result in effective feed management strategies for successful aquaculture.
Course Organization:
The programme covers rotifers both as predators in the aquatic systems and as prey for larval fish. The following aspects will be covered during the workshop
1. Rotifers as predators. Broad description of predatory rotifers in
freshwater ecosystems. The role of predatory rotifers in regulating prey abundances in nature.
2. Application of electivity indices for field captured predatory rotifers. Identification of prey species in the gut of Asplanchna.
3. Asplanchna-Brachionus interactions under laboratory conditions.
4. Mass culturing of Brachionus calyciflorus for using as prey for fish larvae
5. Aspects on basic fish larval feeding. Quantification of selected
variables-swimming speed, length-gape relation, reactive distance,
hunger level, handling time, prey capture success, prey size
selection etc.
6. Gut content studies in field captured fish larvae. Application of
electivity indices.
7. Optimal foraging theory and its implications in rotifer
fish larval interactions
8. Visibility in fish for prey capture success.
Comparisons between visual predatory fish larvae and blind fish larvae
9. Rotifer prey for non-conventional vertebrate predators.
10. Implications of rotifers as prey in fish and ornamental fish culture.
In addition to the above, there will be some special lectures related to
the topics.
