INDUCTION OF TRIPLOIDY IN ATLANTIC HALIBUT BY TEMPERATURE SHOCKS

Abstract:

Both heat and cold shocks induced triploidy in Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus). Heat shocks of 15-30 min at 24 degrees C resulted in a mean frequency of triploidy of 84%, but survival was only 20% compared to control groups. Cold shocks of 2-3 hours at 1 degree C gave 92-95% triploidy and survival of 50-82% compared to control groups. The production of triploid Atlantic halibut is discussed as a possible method to avoid the problems connected to early maturation of male halibut in aquaculture.
