Abstract:
A long term feeding experiment was conducted on juvenile yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata to confirm the practical utilization of formulated diets of either moist or extruded pellets containing alternative protein sources as partial substitutes for fish meal. Though dietary inclusion of 30% defatted soybean meal with or without 15% meat meal resulted in slight decreases in the growth and feed conversion in either type of diet, there were no marked differences in the body composition among the groups. Furthermore, similar hematological and serum characteristics were observed in all groups regardless of the type and composition of the diet tested. The results of the present study together with previous feeding experiments have showed that formulated diets containing alternative protein sources can be utilized in the practical culture of yellowtail without any fundamental adverse effects.
