Abstract:
This paper addresses system dynamics as a modelling technique to design a computerized decision support system for hatchery production management. A simulation model is implemented using the Ithink software, a tool for continued process improvement. The biological component of the model is based on well-known aquaculture formulae for young Atlantic salmon. The physical components describe how processes and facilities relate to the biological component and vice versa mainly using a mechanistic approach. An economic component limited to selected variable costs is linked to the decision support system. The results indicate conformity with the theoretical models used in the simulation model design and verify a potential for a computerized decision support system for hatchery management principles and production policies.
