AQUACULTURE TRONDHEIM

Trondheim, Norway

August 10-12, 1997

This conference, which is organised jointly by the European Aquaculture Society and the Nor-Fishing Foundation, will take place at the premises of the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH). It will take place immediately before the major Aqua Nor 97 trade exhibition.

One of the objectives of the organisers is to specifically address the

latest developments related to salmonid and other cold water fish species which are of interest to farmers, professionals, and researchers. The main target group of this meeting is therefore the marine and freshwater fish farmers of cold water species and researchers in this field, in order to allow fruitful discussions which may lead to future directions in both production and research.

Specific topics of interest to the industry will be presented by various

authorities in the cold water fish sector, which will form the basis for

extensive discussion. For that reason, plenary morning sessions are

organised on Monday, August 11 and Tuesday, August 12, on the following selected topics:

- Global marine aquaculture production - Harache Y. (IFREMER, France)

- Fish feed ingredients and supply of raw materials - Storebakken T.

(AKVAFORSK, Norway)

- Genetic improvement in cultured aquatic organisms - Refstie T.

(Agricultural University of Norway, Norway)

- Strategies for disease control - Hjeltnes B. (Institute of Marine

Research, Norway)

- Juvenile production of salmonids - Kittelsen A. (AKVAFORSK, Norway)

- Juvenile production of marine fish - Holm J.C. (Institute of Marine

Research, Norway)

- Cultivation of Arctic charr - NN

- Ongrowing production technology for salmon - Dahle L.A. (MARINTEK, Norway)

- Optimal harvesting of farmed Atlantic salmon in horizontally organised production companies - Forsberg O.I. (Rogaland Research, Norway)

- Production models and economy in fish farming - Engelsen R. (Rolf

Engelsen AS, Norway)

- Review of the economics of potential systems for farmed production of Atlantic halibut - Sutherland R. (Scottish Agricultural College, UK)

- Aquaculture health management using disease-free juveniles - Sorgeloos P. (Laboratory of Aquaculture and Artemia Reference Centre, Belgium)

On Monday (August 11) and Tuesday afternoon (August 12), parallel sessions/workshops will focus on:

- feed and feedstuff technology

- cultivation and ongrowing of marine fish

- status of halibut farming

- cultivation of salmonids

In addition, a special workshop on `Recirculation technology: selection, operation and management' is being organised by Dr. Lindsay Laird (University of Aberdeen, UK and EAS) which will start on Sunday morning, August 10 (from 09.30-17.30) and continue on Monday, August 11 (09.00-13.00). This course is aimed primarily at fish farmers considering acquiring a recirculation facility. It will also be of interest to researchers, and to equipment and feed suppliers.

The course should enable farmers to decide if recirculation systems are suitable for their needs, to help with the choice of systems, and to

examine the options for its operation. Over the one and a half days, there will be presentations on theoretical, but mainly practical aspects and demonstrations. Case studies will be given by those familiar with the systems and will include: salmonids - turbot - eels, carps and

ornamentals

Experts assisting in this workshop are :

- Lindsay Laird (University of Aberdeen, UK)

- Graham Willoughby (IAT, UK)

- Robert Kelly (salmon farmer, UK)

- Richard Fitzgerald (Aquaculture Development Centre, University College Cork, Ireland)

- Johan Verreth (University of Wageningen, The Netherlands)
