Summary: One of the keys to the advance of aquaculture is the development of complete feeds for every phase of production, from the breeding tanks and hatcheries to the growout ponds and cages. This issue of FEED INTERNATIONAL includes an article about the world's smallest complete feed products- feeds for larval fish. One of the top researchers in this field is Dr. Rick Barrows of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service who has developed 'micro feed' manufacturing techniques with many potential applications beyond aquafeeds. Abstract: Producing complete aquafeeds in the diameter range of 200-500 microns for fish less than 6 mm in length requires a 'quantum shift' from the manufacture of extruded or steam pelleted products. New technology involving 'marumerisation' is likely to lower the cost and improve the performance of these highly technical feeds.
