As one of the principal shrimp consuming nations in the world, there has always been great economic incentive to develop a more consistent, higher quality, cheaper domestic source of shrimp supply. The mission of the U.S. Marine Shrimp Farming Association shall be to act as an advocate for the development of a sustainable, commercially viable U.S. marine shrimp farming industry, in all of its facets. The Association aims to represent all sectors of the industry, including:
1) Farms and Farmers
2) The Feed Sector
3) Equipment Manufacturers & Suppliers
4) Shrimp Farming Research & Technology
5) Shrimp Farming Services & Consultants
6) Farmed Shrimp Processors, Brokers, Marketers, and Retailers.
It is hoped that the association will be a catalyst for the creation and
development of a strong domestic industry. It will take a concerted effort by ALL facets of the industry to cooperate on the development of the production technologies needed for growth of the industry. It will take vision, imagination, persistence, and a commitment of both private and public capital.
Initially, the association hopes to assist the industry in the following six ways:
1) Provide timely communications and information exchange within the association through a web page and / or a newsletter, keeping members up to date on the industry.
2) Provide input to the U.S. Federal Government in general, and in
particular to the U.S. Department of Agriculture as regards its
administration of the U.S. Marine Shrimp Farming Program. In addition, provide input into the U.S. Sea Grant Program as regards the U.S. marine shrimp industry.
3) Organize and sponsor a U.S. marine shrimp farming session at annual WAS and / or NAA meetings.
4) Lobby Federal, State, and Local Governments as regards legislation, policies, regulations, enforcement procedures, and the funding of programs to assist the development of a sustainable and viable domestic marine shrimp aquaculture industry.
5) Act as a reference source on the marine shrimp farming industry for investors, journalists, government agencies, etc.
6) Promote the awareness for and marketing of domestically raised farmed shrimp.
