Dear Colleagues:
The year 1998 will be the "International Year of the Ocean", a
decision made by the United Nations. The Life Science Section and the Biotechnology Action Council of UNESCO recommended that we organize an "International Symposium on Progress and Prospect of Marine Biotechnology, to be held on October 6-9, 1998 in Qingdao, China" (ISPPMB'98) as an activity of the "International Year of the Ocean". Also, ISPPMB'98 is an activity sponsored by UNESCO, CAST, AAAS and other organizations.
The purpose of ISPPMB'98 is to present recent developments in marine biotechnology that have occurred globally during the past decade, to determine areas of development and research in marine biotechnology that have the greatest potential for improvement of human health and the environment in the 21st century and especially to propose those fields of marine biotechnology with the greatest value for developing countries.

4. Cell culture of marine organisms
5. Marine natural products
6. Marine fouling and antifouling
