There will be a severe shortage although it will not be apparent probably for several months as lower quality cysts will be available

for a while.

The Division of Wildlife of Utah, in response to lower salinity on the Great Salt Lake, took conservation measures and limited the total harvest to just over 4.5 million raw pounds. This will work out to a dry weight of under 450 tons of which there is a need in the Aquaculture Industry for over 2000 tons... supply and demand!

Recently I received an ad from Argent stating "A global collapse of

Artemia prices forces liquidation of over 50 tons of inventory".

Why is Argent selling their stocks for a discount price when in the near future Artemia cysts will be in short supply combined with a rising demand?

Emergency Brine Shrimp Closure. On Oct. 27, 1997, the Utah Div.

of Wildlife Resources ordered an emergency closure of the Great Salt

Lake brine shrimp egg harvest, due to threat of overharvesting and the poor commercial quality of brine shrimp eggs. The harvesting season normally runs from Oct. 1 through Jan. 31. About 90% of the brine shrimp eggs are exported to prawn farms in Asia. [Assoc Press]

This is to inform the list members that the Brine Shrimp Harvesting season at the Great Salt Lake was halted by emergency action of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources last week with a slight provision that they may reopen the season in a month or so. This provision was in place for the possibility that the ongoing baseline research might show an increase in available cysts material later....this did not occur and the Division sent a letter yesterday to all harvesting companies that the season is closed until next October.

I do not have to remind everyone of the ramifications of this action as 1995 should be in everyone's recent memory bank. Although there are adequate inventories of lower grade Artemia cysts there will be a shortage of premium product. These lower grade products will be consumed rather quickly as the "new" has precipitated the usual type of panic buying from large cyst consuming countries.

The reason for the emergency closure is due to lower salinity levels on the South Arm of the GSL which is where the harvesting takes place. This lower salinity is a direct result of the lack of exchange between the North Arm (288 ppt) and the South Arm (100-110 ppt) and is a condition not likely to go away soon.
