CONFERENCE ON AQUACULTURE IN THE THIRD MILLENNIUM
11-17 January, 2000, Thailand
Conference objectives:
The main objective of this Conference is to envision the state of
aquaculture in the next millennium and set the agenda for the required
action to attain its potential. For this purpose the Conference will:
(i) review the developments in the aquaculture sector during the last two decades in different regions of the world, and identify trends and challenges facing the future of the sector;
(ii) consider the reports of planning workshops held in preparation for the Conference, and regional and subject reviews undertaken, with a view to delineating the major developments envisaged in the next millennium;
(iii) discuss the existing farming technologies, including site and species selection, farm designs, production systems, inputs, disease control, genetic engineering and over-all farm management procedures;
(iv) identify the impacts of aquaculture development on environment, methods of assessing impacts, and eliminating or reducing adverse impacts;
(v) propose research and pilot production studies to develop appropriate and sustainable technologies that are ecologically and economically sound and are in conformity with social goals;
(vi) identify new or modified culture systems and new target species or strains, that deserve concentrated scientific attention for future farming or stock enhancement, especially in relation to the emerging needs of world fisheries; and outline necessary investigations;
(vii) review human resource development in the aquaculture sector, the maintenance of databases and information exchange, with special reference to the future needs of the industry and scientific work; and
(viii) formulate a comprehensive position paper on the state of the sector, its future in the next millennium and the elements of a
regional/inter-regional co-operative action programme for the achievement of its potential.
Organization of the conference:
The Conference will cover all relevant aspects of small-scale and
large-scale aquaculture in fresh, brackish and marine waters, including cage farming and resource enhancement. It will be based on national/regional workshops or assessment reports, research implementation of projects and enterprises.
The main programme of the Conference will be in plenary and discussions will be led by a group of panelists, who will summarize all the contributions and available information on the topic, in order to stimulate free exchange of ideas and suggestions. The programme will include the following sessions:
I. Overview of the present state of aquaculture and expected developments in the next millennium
II. Farming systems and species groups of importance in future aquaculture
III. Review of present farming technologies and R&D for developing appropriate sustainable technologies
IV. Site selection and input production
V. Environmental impact assessment of projects and balancing of
environmental and economic costs for sustainability
VI. Fish health management and disease control
VII. Legal and social aspects of aquaculture development
VIII. Quality and marketing of aquaculture products
IX. Financing of aquaculture research and industrial development
X. Development strategies and agenda for regional and interregional cooperation
