QUESTION:
Has anyone used formalin prior to the natural spawing season? If so, has there been any noticeable effect on gametogenesis? I have treated Atlantic halibut for external parasites quite successfully with Parasite-S and would like to treat about one month before spawning.

COMMENTS 1:
It is a common practise to use formalin to control fungus on pre-spawning adult salmon with no known ill effects on the gametes.

COMMENTS 2:
Years back at LSU we routinely spawned the sciaenid "red drum" in
recirculating indoor tank systems with photo-temperature control.
Although I don't think we ever generated any hard data, several of us
were convinced our occasional formalin treatments for external
protozoans resulted in declines in egg quality and reproductive
performance. We just tried to have the fish "good and clean" well
before spawning would be initiated.
