LARVAL CULTURE - LIVE FEED WORKSHOP

September 22-24, 1998, St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada

Objectives and Format of the Workshop:

assist Canadian marine fish culture industry to improve larval culture techniques and enhanced production of juvenile fish for on-growing

review current status of live feed production in Atlantic Canada

share latest improvements from around the world

open discussion among participants of problems and areas for improvement

develop plans for collaborative projects to help solve problems and refine techniques

The workshop will provide a learning and information exchange forum for industry, university and government technical personnel involved in marine fish larvae culture. The first day will consist of semi-formal presentations with ample time for discussion and questions on each topic. The second day will consist of in-the-lab demonstrations of techniques such as preparing enrichment emulsions, comparing various enrichment media for rotifer and Artemia enrichment, techniques for assessing larval health, etc. The third day will involve discussion teams to consider larval culture problems identified during the first two days and develop working plans for the coming year to solve the problems or improve culture techniques.

Invited speakers will present the most recent scientific and technological advances including:

Dr. Joe Brown, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Ocean Sciences Centre, Canada: "Feeding strategies and performance of marine finfish larvae."

Dr. Gidon Minkoff, Island Scallops Ltd., Qualicum Beach, B.C., Canada: "General concept of rotifer mass culture and mass culture dimensions."

Dr. Karin Pittman, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway: "Development and metamorphosis in fish related to live feed and nutrition."

Dr. Moti Harel, Center of Marine Biotechnology, University of Maryland, USA: "The multiple role of microalgae in finfish larvae culture" and "The overfeeding syndrome in larvae fed on live feeds."

Dr. Lesley McEvoy, NERC, Institute of Aquaculture, Stirling University, Scotland, UK: "High DHA enrichment emulsions with fish roe phospholipids."

Dr. Philippe Dhert, Laboratory of Aquaculture and Artemia Reference Center, Ghent University, Belgium: "Production & nutritional manipulation of live food."

Dr. John Castell, Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans, Biological Station, St. Andrews, N.B., Canada: "Review of factors affecting nutrient composition of live feeds (algae, rotifers, Artemia, wild zooplankton, etc.)"

Dr. Steve Griffiths, RPC, Province of New Brunswick, Canada: "Summary and discussion of water quality assessments in larval rearing systems in 1997, 1998."

Due to space restrictions, registration will be limited to 45 persons.

Registration deadline: September 1, 1998
