PENAEID SHRIMP HATCHERY OPERATIONS AND MANAGEMENT SHORT COURSE
Oct. 26-Nov. 7, 1998

Aquaculture Center for Training, Education and Demonstration, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, Inc., Ft. Pierce, FL, USA

This 2-week course is designed to provide hands-on training in the
operation and management of commercial penaeid shrimp maturation and larval-rearing facilities. The course will be comprehensive, covering:

site selection and facility design

sourcing and management of broodstock

shrimp maturation technology

hatching techniques

larval-rearing techniques

pure and mass culture techniques for marine microalgae

Artemia hatching techniques

maturation and larval nutrition

water quality management

shrimp health management

Course Details:

This course will concentrate on penaeid shrimp maturation and
larval-rearing technology. Students will select broodstock from a broodstock rearing facility, perform eyestalk ablations, and stock a new maturation tank. A portion of each day will be spent working in a shrimp maturation facility performing daily routines such as food preparation and feeding, tank cleaning, preparation of spawning tanks, collection and transfer of mated females to spawning tanks, collection of nauplii, monitoring of water quality, and record keeping. Nauplii collected will be stocked into larval-rearing tanks and students will culture shrimp through each phase of the larval cycle, from nauplii to postlarvae. Students will also learn procedures for producing live feeds such as marine microalgae and brine shrimp. While managing larval rearing tanks, students will learn about feeding regimes, water quality management, assessment of larval condition and health, and procedures for harvesting and shipping of postlarvae. Tank nursery systems and methods for acclimating postlarvae to freshwater will
also be discussed. Special lab activities are scheduled to learn viral
screening procedures and identification of shrimp larval diseases.
Lectures will cover topics such as site selection, facility design, sourcing of wild broodstock, captive production of broodstock, procedures for producing SPF postlarvae, and control of shrimp larval diseases.
