SHRIMP HATCHERY AND SHRIMP NURSERY COURSES

Aquaculture Center for Training, Education and Demonstration, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, located in Ft. Pierce, Florida, USA, is offering two shrimp courses:

Course 1: Penaeid Shrimp Hatchery Operations and Management
Oct. 26-Nov. 7, 1998

This 2-week course is designed to provide hands-on training in the
operation and management of commercial penaeid shrimp maturation and larval-rearing facilities. The course will be comprehensive, covering:

site selection and facility design; sourcing and management of
broodstock; shrimp maturation technology; hatching techniques; larval-rearing techniques; pure and mass culture techniques for marine
microalgae; Artemia hatching techniques; maturation and larval nutrition; water quality management; shrimp health management

Course 2: Culture of Penaeus vannamei shrimp
December 7-11, 1998


The 5-day shrimp course offered at Harbor Branch provides training in production-scale culture techniques to grow Pacific White Shrimp,
Penaeus vannamei from post-larvae to harvest size.

The course includes a comprehensive manual on all subjects covered in course along with case studies. A bioassay and water quality test to assess the suitability of the culture water to be used for growing shrimp is available to the student at a discount. Here is an overview of the course topics:
Shrimp industry overview on the national and global level; shrimp biology and life cycle; hatchery techniques; system design and selection: pond culture and recirculation systems; stocking and acclimation procedures for post-larvae; shrimp feeding practices and nutrition; water quality parameters; harvesting and processing practices; marketing; HACCP for food shrimp; permits and regulations; disease and health management; business planning
and management; economics of shrimp culture
