Network on Technology of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean TECAM
Organized by: Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (CIHEAM-IAMZ) and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Fisheries Department
Objectives of the seminar
Marine aquaculture in the Mediterranean has increased steadily over the last ten years. At present, the main marine fish species cultured commercially on an intensive scale in the Mediterranean countries are sea bass and sea bream. Improvements in feeding, larvae rearing, breeding, genetics, and fish health knowledge are increasing the productivity of these established species and are enabling additional species to be raised.
Within the limited range of options that producers have in order to ensure a continuous expansion of the Mediterranean aquaculture industry, one strategy is that of the expansion of supply through product diversification, in this case, species diversification. To ensure the viability of new domesticated species they should be controlled from a zootechnical point of view and clearly positioned from a market point of view.
This Seminar will now review the latest developments on the knowledge of the culture of new finfish for Mediterranean aquaculture. Moreover, the Seminar will revise the different methodological aspects that should be taken into consideration in the process of domestication and in the establishment of plan strategies of new finfish candidates for aquaculture. Finally the seminar will offer to experts an ideal forum for information exchange and a place to establish contacts and promote collaborative research projects.
