QUESTION:
I have a question which I have not been able to obtain the answer from
scientific literature. Do Artemia Cysts carry Vibrio bacteria? Is this strain specific? For example, would Great Salt Lake Artemia cysts carry a lower concentration of Vibrio than San Francisco Bay Artemia?

COMMENTS 1:
Yes, Artemia cysts can harbor Vibrio sp as they are ubiquitous to marine environments. I can send you data we have received from Bev Dixon's Lab at Calif. State Univ. Hayward on both GSL and CIS (Turkmenistan, Russian and Kazak) cysts. None of the species isolated were primary pathogens.

COMMENTS 2:
Important are not the bacteria on the cysts as such (mainly gram positive), but the bacterial load after 24 h hatching incubation. These are the brine shrimp that go to the fish tank, so it is this associated bacterial flora (mainly Vibrio) that is of importance. I am convinced (although I never did 100 % identification) that qualitatively this flora - proliferating in fixed conditions of salinity and temperature - is quite identical, irrespective of the cyst origin. There is a quantitative role of the processing conditions and the purity (quality) of the cyst material.
