SHRIMP WHITE SPOT DISEASE IN LATIN AMERICA -

AN UPDATE
Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA)
Press Release April 22, 1999

The shrimp white spot disease virus (WSSV) has been confirmed in Panama. Shrimp disease experts Tim Flegel and Dan Fegan (Thailand) and Victoria Alday (Ecuador) spent several days in early April 1999 collecting and testing samples from wild shrimp populations, hatcheries and farms, and confirmed the presence of the virus in broodstock animals, larvae and juveniles.

A well-timed seminar on "Prevention Techniques for White Spot and
Yellowhead Viruses" was recently held in Panama City, Panama, between April 08-10, 1999. Featured speakers were Tim Flegel (Thailand), Dan Fegan (Thailand), Paul Frelier (United States), Victoria Alday (Ecuador), Fernando Jimenez (Mexico) and Ernesto Quintero (Panama). Over 140 people from Panama, Colombia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Thailand, Taiwan and the United States participated in the seminar. The participants came from hatcheries, farms, processing plants, universities and government agencies. Regis F. Bador, Chairperson
of GAA's Membership Committee, and Darryl E. Jory, editor of GAA's newsletter, represented GAA. The Panamanian Association of Aquaculture Producers (ASPAC) and the Aquaculture Directorate of the Panamanian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Production Development (DINAAC-MIDA) jointly sponsored the seminar. The seminar produced a list of recommended procedures for farms, hatcheries, scientists and governments that can be viewed at GAA web page gaalliance.com.
