WSSV-LIKE AGENT IN ARTEMIA
In an April 26, 1999, email to Russ Allen, president of the United States Marine Shrimp Farmers Association, Dr. Donald Lightner, an expert on shrimp viruses at the University of Arizona, said:
"Yes, we are finding a WSSV-like agent in 'Artemia' by PCR. So are other labs in the USA, in Mexico, and in Asia. Bioassays done by WSSV-positive 'Artemia' in Asia were negative, indicating that WSSV-like virus is not one of the shrimp pathogenic WSSV strains. We are working to confirm this now in my lab by bioassay and by finding at least one PCR primer set that will distinguish the 'Artemia' strains from penaeid strains of WSSV. Our results are not yet available.
