THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SHELLFISH RESTORATION ICSR --EUROPE '99

"COASTAL SHELLFISH - A SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE"

28 September - 2 October 1999, Cork, Ireland

Provisional Programme and Registration:

The maintenance and promotion of sustainable activities in the coastal zone are vital to its environmental and economic health. Shellfish have been exploited by coastal communities for centuries but this natural resource is now threatened globally by pollution and over- exploitation.

This conference continues to promote the 3 Rs of restoration, remediation and ranching which were established by the two previous meetings in Hilton Head, South Carolina. In addition the topic areas have been expanded to include the use of genetics, artificial reefs and GIS as tools in the management of this important resource.

An important development in this process is the new collaboration programme between NOAA (USA) and The Marine Institute (Ireland) which has resulted in a sponsored HABS (harmful algal blooms) session and an Impact of Fishing Gear workshop within the conference.
