QUESTION :

My name is Dennis Hancock and my mother owns Sanudo's Catfish Farm in Elfrida, Arizona. We are having a problem with a white, cottony fungus that has been occurring in our hatchery. We confiscate batches of eggs from our ponds and transfer them to our hatchery building for controlled hatching. After a few days a fungus starts growing and devouring the egg-mass. Is there some way of controlling this or could it be caused by the eggs being exposed ot light after being removed from the egg boxes or hole in the pond where they were layed. Any help would be appreciated.

If you need to contact me, my phone number is 520-642-9361
or E-Mail me at hancock@vtc.net.

COMMENTS 1:

The traditional method has been to use malachite green. This, however, has many problems and has been banned in the US and will, no doubt, be banned in most other jurisdictions before long. With eggs there are several alternatives (none of which is as effective as malachite green but usually adequate). Formaldehyde or hydrogen peroxide are the usual products for repeated treatments. For more details or info please contact me.

COMMENTS 2:

The best method is using formaldehyde. Argent makes a product called Paracide-F that is really good. Suggested concentrations are on the bottle.
