QUESTION:

Can anybody give me info on bacterial suppression during hatching and increasing nauplii separation for my thesis; it would be much
appreciated.

COMMENTS 1:

Bacterial bloom during the hatching of Artemia nauplii is starting from
the onset of hatching (breaking of the embryonic layer). At this time, several substances are released into the hatching medium providing nutrients for bacteria, which will, helped by the high temperatures (28-30°C) support the growth of bacteria.
Hygienic measures such as disinfection of the hatching water, disinfection of the cysts, will improve the start quality of the hatching water, but cannot prevent the bacterial bloom occurring after the breaking of the cysts. Hatch Controller(R) (Inve Aquaculture, Belgium) is an easy-to-use, self-emulsifying product which can keep bacterial levels in the hatching water very low. It is used at a dose of 100ppm, added to the hatching tank at the time of incubation of the cysts. It is preventing and supressing the bacterial growth during hatching and is especially effective on Vibrio sp., the most abundant species associated with Artemia and potential pathogen for fish and shrimp larvae. The use of Hatch Controller is reducing the Vibrio load down to 10,000 - 100,000 times the normal bacterial load found in hatching water.

Does anybody know the composition of Hatch Controller(R)? Is it
available in the US?

COMMENTS 3 :

Hatch Controller is a proprietary product produced by INVE
AQUACULTURE, NV, Belgium.  It is widely used as outlined by Tania and additionally is used for bacterial suppression in the DC SELCO and A1 SELCO line of products.

Is it an anti-biotic?? Is it legal in the US?

COMMENTS 5 :

No, it is not an anti-biotic and it is not illegal in the US although INVE
AQUACULTURE, Inc. has chosen to sell it incorporated rather than as a stand-alone product.  At the start of incubation of Artemia cysts, if you add the prescribed amount of A1 SELCO you get the bacterial suppression, plus the benefit of early enrichment.

COMMENTS 6 :

I am currently studying the effectiveness of Hatch Controller for my thesis and have not had any luck finding out product composition apart
from what is stated, i.e. 80% moisture, 20% lipid and Ethoxyquin. I would be most grateful for any information you have regarding other work with the product in decreasing bacterial bloom and increasing nauplii separation.
