PAPRIKA IN MATURATION DIET

QUESTION:
I came across an article by James Wayban, Greta Martinez and James Sweeney entitled "Adding paprika to P. vannamei maturation improves nauplii quality", World Aquaculture, June 1997 pp. 59-62, and got curious as to what is the current view on this. I am currently using 2g of food-grade paprika per 100g of squid on the diet of pond-reared L. vannamei brood stock. Other ingredients are a) dry maturation diets; b) non-enriched Artemia biomass and c) small clams. Note: we don't use polychaetse.

COMMENTS 1:
I am a firm believer in the importance of pigments in maturation diets. Larval performance really seems to be enhanced when you have a nice rich colour in the ovaries and then in the nauplii. We use enriched Artemia which used to include pigments in the enrichment formula.

COMMENTS 2:
We still use paprika in our maturation diet. It's the cheapest,
easiest
way to add pigment to the diet.

COMMENTS 3:
Are you still using paprika as described in your article and with the
same quantities (i.e.: 2% = 2g paprika per 100g squid), and, do you feel
that it replaces astaxanthin 100% or is there still a need to complement
dietary pigmentation with astaxanthin?

COMMENTS 4:
Natural astaxanthin derived from algae still forms an ingredient of the enrichment emulsion we feed to Artemia adults.

COMMENTS 5:
Does anyone have comparative info (theoretical or experimental) between
paprika and caryophyll pink? This would be for vanammei brood stock.
How about live (or fresh-killed) vs. frozen Polychaetes? I know for
some tropical aquarium fish, live feed for brood stock is a must for
survival of fry, or even for maturation. Any such known or suspected
effect for shrimp?
