QUESTION:

Does any one on the list have the recipe for making up the Asian style
enriched "Egg Custards" for feeding to postlarvae ?

COMMENTS 1:

I visited a shrimp farm in Panama using a similar technique applied over a mosquito net (plastic); this net which worked as an aquamat with food on its surface was used in the raceways. The exact recipe I will have to look it up on my notes, but I remember they used a mix of the following ingredients: egg, yeast, larval diets, fish oil and gelatina.

As an additional note this farm was doing very well versus WSSV.

I know that some small hatchery did that to save the Artemia cost. They mix chicken's eggs, mussel, milk powder, some vitamin premixs and fish or squid oil in the blender. After blending, steam cooking, they squeeze pass through the fine screen net and feed to the PL. This feed will spoil the water qualities in the rearing tank very fast and need to do the water exchange every day and remove the bottom's waste as well.

Knowing that others have been chastised for "going commercial" but I feel it important to let you know that our frozen Daphnia pulicaria has been successfully used as an Artemia replacement for PL-2 onwards.  They are 0.5 micron to 1.5 micron in size and available in frozen 4gal HDPE plastic pails of 25 pounds (11.4kg) each.  The Daphnia are naturally enriched with Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, a blue green alga that stimulates the immune system.  For someone who has made their living from Artemia for the last 30 years it seems strange to be promoting Daphnia, but life is full of changes.
