INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON ARTEMIA

12th - 15th May 2001

Artemia & Aquatic Animals Research Center, Urmia University, Urmia, Iran

It is known that environmental changes affect Artemia cyst and biomass production in natural reservoirs such as Urmia Lake-Iran, as well as in the Great Salt Lake-USA, presently the largest natural biotopes of Artemia in the world. This supports the idea for a more rational use of the natural resources of Artemia. Iran has huge potentials for production of Artemia, either from natural biotopes or through extensive pond culture which could be beneficial to the whole aquaculture production in the world. Hence the idea for organizing this workshop. The Artemia and Aquatic Animals Research Center (AAARC), the host institution, was established in Urmia University in 1998 (although the research activities on Artemia had begun in Urmia University in 1992) in order to study the Artemia resources in the country, their ecology, culture, genetics, microbiology, use in aquaculture, etc.

Topics will include Artemia culture, genetics, ecology and resource assessment, enrichment and use of Artemia in larviculture of fish and shrimp. Demonstrations of standard methods for the study of life cycle characteristics, enrichment with HUFA and Vit. C, analytical methods, intensive culture in tanks and sampling methods from large lakes will be provided.
