QUESTION:

I am interested in hearing opinions and/or reading documentation on the subject of malachite green in relation to prevention of fungi in ova.... the handling of and any alternatives that are as effective.

COMMENTS 1 :

The malachite green was used some years ago in order to combat fungi in ova, but by now its use is prohibited by the US FDA in food fish. There are several other products to combat the fungi, like benzalkonium chloride 10-50 ppm to disinfect marine shrimp larvae, or treflan at 0.1 active ingredient ppm to marine shrimp larvae or fish larvae.

There are several references at Aquaculture by Elsevier, talking about the use of fungi controls in fish, and shrimps.

Sometime back, malachite green was identified as a possible carcinogen.

On our trout farm we give the eggs a daily formaldehyde bath to prevent fungi.  We use 130ml of formaldehyde solution (36degrees w/w) diluted with 100L of water or to a similar ratio so all the eggs are covered.  The eggs sit in the bath for 15 minutes and then are returned to fresh water.  We find it works very well.

Malachite green is prohibited in Italy.

A good substitutive product is Ittiocid from Tropical Farm s.r.l., via Gatta n.17, 30172 Mestre - Venice - Italy.
