CULTURE OF P. INDICUS SPAWNERS

QUESTION:

During last farming seasons me and my colleagues had problems in obtaining a sufficient number of wild P. indicus spawners. We have selected some 3000 shrimps from our last crop. I would be glad if anybody could give me advice on how to prepare and use them as spawners.

At the moment they are placed in ponds covered with light polyethylene sheets at a density of 2/m2 and fed with pelleted feed & crab trash.

The water temperature is about 17-18 °C.

COMMENTS 1:

Although I've not had any experience on preparing P. indicus as broodstock, there is now sufficient evidence that crabs are a viral reservoir of WSSV- therefore I must caution you against feeding crabs to your potential broodstock that should be as virus-free as possible!

We have our experimental farm for rearing of P. indicus broodstock PL to spawner.  Since the distribution of P. monodon is very limited in Iran, our next plan is rearing of P. monodon spawners.  Is there any center/station in wich they work on rearing of broodstock?(PL to spawner)

I know of work done with the FAO on an island off Madagascar (Nose Bei - spelling??). There was a cover feature on this a few years ago in Fish Farming International. There is now a large P. monodon farming industry on the Madagascar mainland, and I hear that they use pond reared P. monodon.
