QUESTION:

I need to produce bacteria-free cultures of Artemia for some marine
fish larvae first feeding experiments.

Does anyone know how/if this has been achieved???

You can find a useful description of a method developed by D'Agostino in:

Author: Verschuere, L., Rombaut, G., Huys, G., Dhont, J., Sorgeloos, P., and Verstraete, W.
Publication Date: 1999
Title: Microbial control of the culture of Artemia juveniles through
preemptive colonization by selected bacterial strains.
Journal: Applied and Environmental Microbiology
Volume: 65
Issue: 6
Pages: 2527-2533

This article can be retrieved as a pdf-file through our homepage but you'll need to ask a password to my colleague Marc Verschraeghe. See:

I don’t know about bacteria-free but certainly reduced levels can be achieved by utilizing A1 SELCO from INVE… Contact them for further info.

Another method is using antibiotics, we have not found any residues (by bioassays) of the antibiotics employed. We obtained completely disinfected nauplii (by total viable count). The reference is:
