PINK PATCHES IN LARVAL TANKS

QUESTION:
I have noticed pick colour patches in larval tank walls of P. indicus
fry. Can any one tell us what are these?
I am operating my hatchery for last 5 runs. We
don’t use antibiotics or probiotics. We think it is time to shut down the
facility for disinfection. We noticed these patches in our new fibre glass
tanks and subsequently the moulting failed from zoea to mysis and from mysis
to PL.

I have seen these patches in P. monodon in the Philippines, Malaysia and
Bali. And L. vannamei larvae tanks in Belize. In my experience it
caused no problems as many tanks with this had good production. But what is
it? I'm not sure. I always presumed it was some type of
bacteria. It came and went on its own.

That could be Pseudomonas contamination. This is a
common problem in larviculture tanks in Ecuador.
The first you have to do is take samples and swab in some specific media
culture (like Pseudomonas Agar or Cetrimide Agar), then you can detect some
characteristic strong odor from bacterial growth.
Finally you must confirm doing some biochemical identification or API
analysis.
