Fifth International
Symposium on Flatfish Ecology
The role of flatfish in benthic ecosystems
3-7th November 2002, Port Erin Marine Laboratory, Isle of Man (UK)
This
Symposium will address the role of flatfishes in benthic ecosystems under
three themes (Patterns, Processes and Management). The conference sessions
will be addressed by keynote speakers and summarized through discussion
panels. These sessions will include:
- Stock structure [Methodologies for determining stock structure,
descriptions of stock structure, genetic studies, tagging, meristics and
hard structures]
- Larval supply [Processes affecting larval supply and settlement,
hydrodynamics, modeling drift and survival, growth, affects of climate
change, forcing functions, comparative studies]
- Habitat [Evaluating and implementing concepts of habitat quantity and
quality, Habitat use at the population and individual levels, bioenergetic
approaches, habitat management/manipulation]
- Trophic interactions [Top down and bottom up interactions, competition,
predator/prey interactions (including cannibalism), facilitation.]
- Collapse and recovery [Causes and effects, management plans, effort
regulations, spatial and temporal considerations, Allee effects, natural
versus fishing mortality.]
- Stock Enhancement [Benefits and consequences of stock enhancement,
genetics, carrying capacity.]
