The Kyonggi Do Inland Waters Development Research Institute has succeeded in
artificially produced sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) seed, the roe of which
is valued as caviar.
Production of sturgeon seed is still a rare breakthrough in the world and
South Korea will be recognised as a pioneer in the field.
The Kyonggi Do Inland Waters Development Research Institute started studying
artificial production of sturgeon seed in 1998 by transplanting larvae from
Russia. Successful seed production will enable the Institute to reproduce
sturgeon domestically. It is anticipated that the dream of successful
commercial sturgeon farming will come true soon.
