ARTEMIA
PROCESSING

Question:
Is it true that Vietnamese Artemia are better quality product then
other? I would tend to think that this is due to their smaller size, any
other reasons?
What is the cost of an Artemia processing unit, where could I find
information on such topic (web site, contact or book)?
What would be the production cost for one kg of Artemia?

COMMENTS 1:
Companies like INVE historically catagorize their
Artemia cysts by strain, fatty acid composition, naupliar size, hatching
efficiency (H/E), hatching percentage based on a 95% confidence level.
The San Francisco cysts, Vietnam cysts, Peruvian cysts have very good chance
of being smaller in naupliar size and high in EPA (20:5w3). This is
advantageous because of the ability to offer them sooner to marine finfish
larvae plus having the added benefit of the higher levels of EPA.
You can contact the Lab for Aquaculture and Artemia Reference Center at the
University of Ghent, Belgium for answers to a lot of your production
questions. The cost of processing equipment is relative to the
quantity of cysts needed to be processed. If you are referring to lab
quantities (50-100 kgs) then home made equipment can suffice. However,
companies like INVE have hundreds of thousands of dollars in processing
equipment. The production costs would vary according to the above
criteria. However, I would estimate the cost of one finished kg of
Great Salt Lake Artemia to be in the neighbourhood of $22/kg (harvest,
pre-clean, processing)....This price will change with the quantity
harvested....

1. I don’t now if the
Vietnamese Artemia is better than the American Artemia, but the protein
contents of the American (Mexico) Artemia is a good quality.
2. We sell frozen Artemia at
7 US$/ kg
