Abstract:
The effects of irradiance and growth phase on the
concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) were examined in Isochrysis sp.
(T.ISO), one of the most popular microalgal species used in aquaculture.
Across four different irradiances (15, 40, 100 and 200 μmol
m-2 s-1 with continuous illumination; i.e., light
conditions typically found in hatcheries), the average % AA in cultures
during logarithmic phase ranged from 0.38% (15 μmol
m-2 s-1) to 0.49% (100 μmol
m-2 s-1) of cell dry weight. Average % AA values for
cultures at 40 and 100 μmol m-2
s-1 reduced by more than half to 0.16% and 0.20%, respectively
with the onset of stationary phase.
