SS-ROTIFERS

Question:

Can anyone recommend a reliable source for some true ss-rotifers for
marine finfish larvae? I am looking for some starter cultures with rotifers sized below 180-200 microns.

COMMENTS 1:

I can highly recommend using Micromonas pusilla as a food source for Brachionus rotundiformis.
From my research, Micromonas pusilla increased the initial population by 1400% compared to 250% for Nannochloropsis salina.

COMMENTS 2 :

We are currently using one SS rotifer strain at the CCMAR ; the mean size is 180µm, but juveniles are even smaller (~100µm). We get this strain (Brachionus rotdundiformis var. Tschugunoff ; cf. the paper from Hagiwara, 1995) from the Artemia Research Center (Ghent-BELGIUM). It is one of the best place to get all kind of rotifer strain, at last in Europe. Regarding to the culture, we grow them at 28-30°C and low salinity (around 12ppm). With these parameters, we have got the best results.
