World's
largest tuna hatchery set up in Bali
Aberdeen, Scotland, UK:
Japan and Indonesia have combined forces to set up
South East Asia’s biggest tuna hatchery, on the island of Bali.
The project is being run by the Gondol Research Institute for Mariculture,
and Japan's Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation has pledged to invest
$2.5 million in it, and has assigned scientists to join Indonesian
researchers in studying the hatching behavior of yellowfin tuna, report
Reuters.
Indonesia produces 200,000 tonnes of tuna every year worth around $400
million, which includes yellowfin much favoured for Japanese sashimi.
However, the stock of wild fish is falling, and there are major concerns
about over-fishing.
The hatchery project has around 60 yellowfins in pools, and eggs will be
collected in August.
