Backgrounds |
From September 3 to 6, under the patronage of his majesty the king of Belgium, Albert II, the "3rd Fish & Shellfish Larviculture Symposium", larvi 2001, will take place. Conference Chairman is Prof. Patrick Sorgeloos (Laboratory for Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center, RUG) and co-organizers are Prof. Yngvar Olsen (Trondhjem Biological Station, NTNU, Norwegian University of Science and Technology) and Prof. Frans Ollevier (Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology, KULeuven, Catholic University of Leuven).
Ten years after the first organisation of larvi'91 in August 1991, much progress has been made in various disciplines of larviculture research as part of aquaculture. The industrial production of fish fry, shrimp postlarvae and mollusc seed, as a first crucial step to the cultivation of aquaculture organisms has further expanded and grown into a full bio-industry. It is presently valued at more than half a billion Euro annually. On this symposium the different aspects, important to an optimal production in larviculture, will be evaluated and discussed : quality of fish fry, nutritional deficiencies, genetic and biotechnologic aspects, zootechniques, pathology and prophylaxis.
The aim of larvi 2001 is to bring researchers and professionals together to evaluate recent progress, identify problem areas and formulate solutions. It is also within the scope of the symposium to stimulate future cooperation in research and industrial production of freshwater as well as marine fish and shellfish larvae. The international character of this event was already established on the two previous symposia in 1991 and 1995 in the participation of scientists and professionals from throughout the world and today on larvi 2001 this has been exceeded. More then 400 participants from 55 different countries are expected. Members of the scientific committee, which is responsible for the evaluation and chairmanship of the different sessions, are prominent and internationally recognised scientists from the field of aquaculture.
The "golden sponsor" from the symposium is the INVE Group, who has grown today into a world market leader in larviculture food and feeds.
