Nursery systems are commonly used in semi-intensive and more intensive culture, whether the post-larvae (PL) are wild caught or hatchery reared. By first placing the PL in nursery ponds or other nursery systems for 30 to 60 days before stocking in the growout ponds, better use is made of a given land area. More crops can be reared in growout pond per year, and overall yield per ha is increased. During transfer from nursery to growout ponds, an accurate shrimp count can be made, resulting in better inventory assessment and more accurate feeding rates. The different nursery systems used are:
