Ocean exposure

Historic long term data on normal and abnormal weather for the site are critical but may be unavailable. Wind directions for common and rare events combined with charts showing site exposure and water depths can be used to estimate normal and extreme wave characteristics at the site. From these calculations, the wave run-up, the limits of the surf zone (breaking waves), and the risk of wave damage can be estimated (Colt & Huguenin, 1992).
