1.1 Preparing the Biofilter

At this stage you should know the optimal temperature and salinity for the inoculation of the biofilter, so you should be able to actually start filling the biofilter with water. But first of course you need to know how much water you need to fill the biofilter...

1.1.4 Water Volume

If you don't want the biofilter to flood or to run dry, you will have to calculate the total amount of water you need to fill up the biofilter. Therefore, it is essential that you have some exact information about your substrate material (amount, volume, density,...). Measures can vary according to different circumstances, but in our case, we suppose that we have the following information about the tools and materials at our disposal:

- total volume of the biofilter: 750 l
- total amount of substrate: 1000 kg
