1.3.3.2.A Conditioning of the biofilter
Ammonium is provided as NH4Cl and given during one week. On the Y axis you can see that the administered ammonium concentration is raised daily. The bacteria grow well and produce nitrate as an end product.
After one week of conditioning it seems that the biofilter works properly. NH4Cl has been provided in sufficient amount to ensure the growth of the bacteria. Moreover, the NH4+ has been assimilated and converted to NO3-. However, if the nitrification process is continued for a longer period of time the conversion of ammonium to nitrate may be slowed down.
